Documentary Film GroupDocumentary Film Group -- Film swirl

Bookmark this page for information about documentary films showing around Oslo and announcements about private screenings held in members' homes. The private screenings are scheduled irregularly at the initiative of the member hosting the event, and usually consist of a social gathering where the film is briefly introduced plus an informal discussion following the film. If you are interested in hosting a screening or would like to recommend a film to screen, please contact the group's coordinator.

On March 15th, WELCOME TO LEITH will be screened at the home of Ann Hanssen, Ekebergveien 246 B at Nordstrand. This is an award-winning movie about how white supremists tried to take over a small North Dakota town. The movie was released in 2015 and is even more timely today, as we note how the alt-right has positioned itself. Our group member Betty Haugen, a native North Dakotan, will give us some inside-impressions. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Light refreshments and post-movie discussion. Register at EVENTS or send an e-mail to your coordinator.

Join the Documentary Film Group at DOGA on Tuesday, September 22 at 18:00 for a documentary about the secret workings of China's Communist Party and a Chinese mayor's mission to revitalize his city's decrepit infrastructure and economic prospects. THE CHINESE MAYOR (2015) won the special jury prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival "for gaining such extraordinary trust and intimacy with its main character and thereby revealing a world which is increasingly relevant today." Through his fascinating if guarded, ever on-the-go protagonist, director Hao Zhou provides a rare inside-look at local Chinese politics. Serving as a microcosm for the larger issues facing the rapidly changing nation as a whole, this profile of the city of Datong -- once the thriving capital of Imperial China -- reveals the contradictions faced in the pursuit of progress, as well as the personal price paid by Mayor Geng Tanbo. The film will be introduced by Alexandra Cruz, project manager for Oslo Architecture Triennale which, among other things, fosters public debates around architecture and urbanism. Tickets are 80 kroner at Norsk design- og arkitektursenter (DOGA), Hausmanns gate 16.

Additional event information is available at DOGA. Questions can be sent to the Documentary Group Coordinator, Lynn Rosentrater.

Join the Documentary Film Group at Cinemateket on Wednesday, September 2 at 19:30 for a documentary on the battle between bicycles and cars. BIKES vs CARS (2015) depicts activists in cities around the world who are using bicycles as a do-it-yourself tool for local change, and contrasts them with the powerful business interests that lobby for and promote private car ownership despite ever worsening traffic chaos. The film will be introduced by its director, Fredrik Gertten, who will also participate in an open discussion after the film. Buy your ticket at Cinemateket and look for AWC members upstairs near the theater's entrance. Note: the film is in English, whereas the pre- and post-film presentations will be in Swedish and Norwegian.
