It was one of those brisk, bright autumn days, all blue skies and red and golden trees just like the autumn days we remember as a 6 year old.  Halloween just around the corner, anticipation in the air and time for us to give a little of our time and skills to help the Halloween spirit along.  Jack O' Lanterns originated in Ireland.   Story has it that one lazy , thieving farmer named Jack trapped the devil and only let him go after he promised not to take his soul.  Now Jack was a a sinful man, so the Pearly Gates were closed to him and now Hell's Portals were also closed and Jack had nowhere to go and it was dark.  The Devil mockingly threw him an ember from the flames of hell, Jack was a lazy thief but he was practical, so he hollowed out a turnip and placed the ever glowing ember inside and from then on was known as Jack of the Lantern as he endlessly wandered looking for a final resting place.  It is said that Jack o' lanterns specifically ward off vampires; in the light of the Jack O' Lantern, the identity of the vampire is revealed and he then has to give up his hunt.  The tradition was brought to America by the Irish and the Scots - they found pumpkins were much easier to carve.  Join us and help Norwegian kids to make "proper" Jack O'Lanterns at CCVest on Saturday, October 22.  An hour or two of your time, 10 am - 3pm is more than welcome, we have 100 pumpkins and plenty of carving knives......all you need is an apron, maybe rubber gloves, a metal spoon or ice cream scoop!  For our efforts CCVest donates 4,000 kroner to our scholarship fund.     See you at CCVest, lower level.
