An Accidental Organizer

Brit-Agnes Sværi, a Procurement Manager at Yara, has been a long-standing advocate for the advancement of women professionals and for the benefits of diversity in the workplace. Since 2014, she has also served as a refugee guide for the Red Cross. In this capacity she helps refugees understand Norwegian culture and supports them as they try to get an education and/or job.

Late last year, Brit-Agnes decided to do more for values she believes in by diving in head first to a role that was completely new to her, that of an organizer for the nascent Global Women’s March. Lacking experience in this area, starting out alone, and unsure if her efforts would result in much, she stepped out of her comfort zone and gave it a shot. She connected with organizers in the United States, and before she knew it had a group of dedicated volunteers in Oslo and a new role as one of seven women, coordinating all of the marches outside of the United States.

February is a month for indulging your sweet tooth; Betsy will serve up a special treat.

Come hear Brit-Agnes talk about her experiences helping to organize what turned out to be the largest global march in history.  What was it like to take on this role? What challenges did she face? How did international voices like hers influence what was initially envisioned as a US-focused effort? Where does she go from here? And perhaps most importantly, what advice does she have for us to find and use our own voices for issues we care about?
